ENGLAND South Under 16s maintained their unbeaten record at the BMW International Festival by following up their 22-22 draw with France A by beating Scotland Under 16s 26-20 in Berkshire today. Four penalties from fly-half Owen Waters (Kingswood School, Chippenham RFC and Dorset & wilts) helped England South keep control of the match after full-back Will Sutton (Caistor GS, Lincoln RFC and Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire) and captain and full-back Kieran Kelly (Prior Park College, Cirencester RFC and Dorset & Wilts) crossed in quick succession for first half tries.
England South trailed to an early penalty but thanks to the try burst from Sutton and Kelly, both of which were converted by Waters, and a penalty from the fly-half they led 17-3 at the break. Scotland reduced the deficit to seven points with a converted try immediately after the re-start although Scotland pulled it back to 20-17 with their second try.
Waters struck two more penalties to give England a nine points cushion before the match lost its shape when uncontested scrums were ordered after Scotland ran out of props.
A late penalty pulled Scotland to within a converted try but England South’s composure saw them to a deserved win.
England North Under 16s, who have won both their matches to date, will play Belgium Under 17s in their final match at the BMW Wellington Festival on the first XV pitch at Wellington College on Friday April 5 (11am).
England South will bring down the curtain on another successful festival when they take on United States Under 17s, also on the main pitch, at 1.30pm.
