Christ College is always a wonderful place to go and watch rugby and today the sun came out and lit up the Brecon 7s. The Kings School Worcester won a pulsating final against a very talented Llandovery College side and they were deserving champions.

They played brilliantly to win the final but the second half against Ellesmere College in the previous round is perhaps what the coaches will be most proud of. Having beaten Bryanston 26-0 in the quarter-finals they found themselves in a very difficult position at half time in the semi: 2 tries down with a man in the sin bin. Ellesmere had rolled over Millfield 29-14 in the quarter finals and they suddenly had one foot in the final. The Kings School dug deep to score a try, and slowly the momentum shifted their way. After some nice passing they scored late in the game to see them through. It was a big test of character and they passed with flying colours. They will meet Ellesmere again in the group stage at Rosslyn Park and both sides will be looking forward to that match.

The RefereesLlandovery‘s route to the final was relatively straightforward in comparison. A 50-5 win over the hosts Christ College followed by a 45-12 win over tournament surprise package Wellington School in the Semi-Final. With fitness playing such a crucial part in sevens that should have been to Llandovery’s advantage, but they couldn’t make it pay for them in the final. They fought back from 2 tries down to go ahead 12-10, but a late Kings Worcester try and then 40 seconds of frantic defence saw them through. Kings played with control and passed the ball well, they had the physicality in the contact areas when they needed to take it in, and the pace out wide to finish off their moves. We are looking forward to watching them again at the Marches 7s next weekend

It was a brilliant day. A special mention to Wellington School who played out of their skins to beat Monmouth in the quarter-finals and are ones to watch for the rest of the sevens season. It will be interesting to see how they do at the Bryanston 7s next weekend. Many of the Schools here were playing in their first sevens event of the year and at times it was clear that the players were still looking for contact or to kick when they should have passed the ball. So whilst the standard was very high it’s exciting to look ahead to the rest of the sevens season as teams click into sevens mode and fitness levels improve.
