A fifth win has kept unbeaten Cranleigh among the front runners in the SOCS Daily Mail Schools Trophy.

A 25-10 win over Denstone left Andy Houston, Cranleigh's director of rugby, claiming it was the 'highest standard of rugby I've coached at school boy level.'

Second-half tries from Hayden Hyde and Hugh Tizard stretched Cranleigh's lead though Houston said the contest could have gone either way.

'They (Denstone) were the best team we've played,' Houston said about a season which has also brought wins over Brighton College, St John's Leatherhead, Epsom College and Hurstpierpoint.

The sequence puts Cranleigh third behind unbeaten leaders Wellington and second-placed Sedbergh in the national competition sponsored by the school management system SOCS.

Wellington racked up a 71-14 victory against Bedford for a seventh win while Sedbergh accounted for Barnard Castle, 31-0, to complete a sixth success.

Brighton, who lost 29-17 to Cranleigh last month, have improved since that setback helped by the good form of Scotland under-18 back Jon Searle.

A 33-22 win over RGS High Wycombe sets up Brighton for this weekend's St Joseph's Festival, a tournament they lost in the final last season to Cranleigh.

Monmouth are another team emerging as one to beat after claiming an inaugural win in a new annual contest against Malvern College, 31-23.

The Border Cup was staged under lights at Ledbury RFC where Monmouth enjoyed the better of the second half after leading 7-6 at the interval.

David Richards, a centre who is attached to the Dragons Academy, led the way alongside fly half Laure Baldwin.

Monmouth have also run up five wins while only losing to Clifton College whose good form continued in a 30-19 win over Bristol GS.

Haileybury ended Stamford's unbeaten run of four games. The Hertfordshire team won 27-7 after an excellent opening 20 minutes which featured two tries for Kyle Douglas and one from Sam Cappaert. The man of the match vote went to lock Oliver Moody.

Another player to impress was Canford's James Elwood. He contributed 28 points in the 38-19 win over Blundell's – the Dorset school's fourth win following success over Millfield, Hampton and Portsmouth GS.
