The King’s School beat RGS Worcester 11-6 in the Daily Mail Trophy on Wednesday, claiming the ‘Modus Cup’ back for the Worcester-based school in the process at Sixfields.
While RGS were reigning victors, King’s season had been marred with injuries and they had struggled to gel together as a team ahead of the game.
RGS knew then they would be in for a tough evening and the key to any success would be based around strong defensive pattern and counter attack.
From the outset King’s sent strong runners into the RGS midfield, met by some outstanding challenges from Ed Owen, Gus Thomas and returning captain Will Tromans.
The opening minutes were exhausting with the ball in play for multiple phases and the game being played at phenomenal speed. King’s applied pressure but were only able to take a three-point penalty to show for it.
Although limited in possession, RGS showed some threat in attack with Ed Owen releasing dangerous runner Gus Thomas. With RGS’ pressure and a strong set piece, the King’s discipline broke and Thomas capitalised on any penalties on offer.
